Aberdeenshire, United Kingdom
River Dee, 11am, Ducks £2.50 each
Sponsored by the Netherley Guest House
Quackers? We must be! Locals and visitors alike will be delighted to see the return of the Duck Race to the banks of the River Dee. Duck numbers (plastic ones!) are limited to just 250. You can buy one duck or a whole family, just be quick...! Purchase your number/s from our Box Office or email email@example.com to reserve them.
The ducks will be thrown in by expert hands about 500 yards west of the Royal Bridge (which was opened by Queen Victoria in 1885) and caught again at a point just short of the bridge. If your duck is the first to cross the finish line, you win £100! Last little friend home gets its owner a special prize from Ballater Butcher HM Sheridan... Spectating will be possible from the west side of the bridge. Traffic will be marshalled but please take care. If the river doesn't behave we'll select a winner from a game on the Green.
When & Where
Ballater Victoria Week
Initiated in 1987 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Queen Victoria's accession and to raise funds for the refurbishment of the Victoria and Albert Halls, Ballater's Victoria Week brings together numerous sections of the community to lay on a host of fun activities for all ages. This year's our Silver Jubilee (and The Queen's Diamond) plus there's The Olympics on, so the challenge is on to make it the best yet!
Highlights among the events include a film night, duck race, pet show, scarecrow competition, evening of clairvoyance, Scottish evening and children's discos. Victoria Week has been taking place in the village for 25 years, and all the old favourite events will also be laid on, including the ghost tours, 4x4 safaris, book fair and photography exhibition, plus sporting and musical events.
